Our Women Empowered article series showcases the exceptional women at Crowe MacKay LLP.

Shannon was born and raised in a rural community in Nova Scotia, before relocating with her family to Moncton, New Brunswick in the mid 1990’s, where she completed her education and began a professional career. Shannon has been happy to call Regina home since 2014. Read our interview with Shannon where she dives deep on her support network, key mentors and professional challenges and successes she’s faced throughout her career.

Who has been your biggest supporter?

I have a very close knit circle of friends of family who have supported me throughout my career, whether in small ways by dropping off meals during busy season, taking my children out for an afternoon so I can get a few extra hours of work done, or sending me uplifting and inspirational messages during some of those long weeks throughout busy season.

Have you had any key mentors?

My inspiration for pursuing a career in public practice was my best friend of 20 years, Mandy Roy, who still works in the industry and is completing her In-Depth tax training. As both a friend and a mentor, she has always been a strong pillar of support for me and an honest sounding board.

What made you decide to become a CGA?

I had decided to return to school to pursue a professional accounting career after the birth of my daughter and after completing a two year college program, found that the CGA program of professional studies provided me with the appropriate education that I needed to pursue a career in public accounting, while allowing me the flexibility that I needed to balance all of the responsibilities in my life.

What challenges have you faced in your profession?

My constant challenge is to maintain a healthy work/life balance, especially during busy season. Sometimes I just have to shut off my phone and spend the evening baking cookies and building Lego with my children.

Why do you love what you do?

There are so many reasons why I love my work. I enjoy how much interaction we have with our clients and how sometimes just a quick five minute conversation can make such a difference in their lives. I enjoy working with like-minded team members, and training and mentoring students as they navigate the world of public practice. Most importantly, I love that every day is a new day, with new challenges and opportunities and that this career is providing me the environment to constantly grow as an individual and as a professional.

What is the best part of the job?

The best part of the job is that I leave at the end of each day with a little bit more in my toolbox than I had the day before. This is of course, because we work with an incredibly skilled team of intelligent professionals who are committed to supporting one another and providing excellent client service.
