Blog: New CPA Series 2018 – Allison Watkins

March 8th, 2018

With grad ceremonies behind us, it is time we introduce you to our next generation of leaders! Our CPA’s have shown Commitment, Perseverance and Achievement throughout the program. We are proud to introduce:

Allison Watkins, Calgary

Allison grew up in Kingston Ontario, but is a Maritimer at heart, spending most summers there growing up and attending an east coast university.

Why did you originally choose to start or continue your career at Crowe MacKay LLP?

I decided to pursue a career with Crowe MacKay because I liked the idea of working with a smaller firm instead of one of the Big 4. I also wanted to work for a company that I knew would support me throughout my journey in the CPA program. I discovered Crowe MacKay had a good CPA student program in place, which attracted me to the firm. Also, having gone to school in New Brunswick, I thought it would be an interesting change to move out west and to the Rockies.

Why did you decide to pursue a career as a CPA?

After university and getting my bachelor of commerce degree, I wasn’t 100% sure what I wanted to do next. I decided to go forward with my CPA to see what was out there in the world of public practice and I knew getting my CPA would open a world of doors!

What was the best advice you were given that helped you through preparing for the CFE?

During the CFE process, the best piece of advice I was given was that while doing a case, if you found it difficult not to stress because it is pretty much guaranteed that everyone else found it just as hard as you did! Also, to follow the Densmore way and the basic approach. It may seem weird at first, but in the end it really helps.

What advice could you give someone entering the CPA program?

The best advice I can give someone just entering the program is to not expect it to be the same as it was in university or college. The program is much different than what you see in school and it can be a difficult time adjusting to the new process. Everyone wants to see you succeed so listen to those helping you and don’t be afraid to ask for advice.
