Blog: Student audit training conference in Yellowknife

February 24th, 2017 student training conference 2017

Read this wonderful summary from Jelaina Bakota on the 2017 Student Training Conference.

For our students, the training conference is such an annual highlight. We rotate the conference, giving an opportunity for our different offices in Northern and Western Canada to host our up and coming professionals, showcasing the highlights of each location. As a student, it’s exciting to go to new places, meet new faces, and get a little break from the computer screen.

This year’s conference was held in Yellowknife, NT! Besides audit training sessions and a CFE prep intensive for our current year CFE writers, we built in fun and social activities – including a private viewing of the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre’s exhibits, dog-sledding with Beck’s Kennels, and a snowy dinner adventure to a cabin by driving on the frozen Great Slave Lake.
Not only are these activities interesting, but they give our students a priceless opportunity: one on one time to connect with other students and professionals firm wide.

Fast forward many years, one might remember a few tips and tricks when it comes to tackling an audit procedure but, the real memories come from getting to know each other. Having been an instructor for our student training conference for the past three years, I cannot say enough about how awesome it is to watch our students develop these connections.

From dog-sledding with the CEO of the firm (thanks to Bruce Picton for making the trip up!), to a nighttime snowball fight on snowy Great Slave Lake (thanks Fred Deschenes and Robin Middleton!), to singing Boeheim Rhapsody after dinner at karaoke, we all return home having got to know each other a little better.

These are the kind of relationships that will last a lifetime; it’s the beginning of both a personal and professional network that across Northern and Western Canada that our students will turn to throughout their CPA career.

Huge thanks to our PDF team and our Yellowknife partners and staff for hosting this year.
